APPENDIX I.THE RADICALS.
In the following Table the Radicals with their pronunciation and meanings are arranged in the order of their numbers,which is accoraing to the number of strokes in each radical,and the order followed in all Chinese and Foreign dictionaries.
The class of formation to which the character belongs(see Introduction,Vol.I,p.9)and remarks on the significance of their composition are given in parallel columns.
The modern forms of the characters with the ancient forms(commonly known as the Seal characters)are given on pp.450-464.
It is not intended that the information should all be learned,but simply read and noted as an aid to memory.It is desirable,however,that the student should be able to recognize and write each radical,know its sound and meaning,and,in the case of those most commonly used,its number.
