應劭《風俗通義》。按《太平廣記》卷論及者,不復贅。
“殺君馬者,路傍兒也。”按張率《走馬引》:“斂轡且歸去,吾畏路旁兒”;梁簡文帝《愛妾换馬》:“真成恨不已,願得路傍兒”;楊慎《太史升菴全集》卷一五《衍古諺》詩:“未樹邊隅績,徒爲冶游疲;始信殺君馬,端是路傍兒。”韓菼《有懷堂詩稿》卷四《宿遷道中》第一首:“枉殺人才及此老,鈴聲已自笑郎當”,用黄旛綽語,謂己非人才,枉被辟召,第二首:“老驥可能仍蹀躞?故人多是路傍兒!”,謂友人非知己者,苦相慫恿;皆善用事。《韓非子·内儲説》上越王式怒鼃節:“由此觀之,譽固足以殺人矣!”;焦循《易餘籥録》卷一二:“《列子·楊朱篇》引周諺云:‘田父可坐殺’,余則云:‘學究可譽殺’”;即路傍兒“快之”而致馬力盡以死也。
“汝南陳伯敬行必矩步,坐必儼然,目有所見,不食其肉。” 按《孟子·梁惠王》、賈誼《新書·禮篇》、《大戴禮·保傅》皆言于禽獸見其生不食其死,聞其聲不嘗其肉。談者迂之。英小説中一女郎牧豬,晨入牢必起居羣豬,叩問何日願爲俎上肉,歸舍尚淚淋浪,哀其不免供人口腹(Annie asked them how they weregetting on,and when they would like to be eaten. Then she came back with foolish tears,for thinking of that necessity),女有兄,英雄人也,感之亦不忍食豕肉;一文家(R. L. Stevenson)嘗牧豬,自言:“與豕相暱,則食其肉時有啖人肉之感”(Onceform an intimacy with a pig and eating pork partakes of the na- ture of cannibalism)。頗有儒家風也。
